Facebook Updated Issues: Guidelines for Its Ad Business

Facebook the largest social media network in the world issues Updated Guidelines for its Ad business on 28 August 2019. The framework of guidelines is being updated and it connects to issues concerning politics, elections, and other social issues.

Facebook added, that this update on political advertising rules will start to apply from September.

Abiding the guidelines, Facebook plans to bring the groups in one place that want to run advertisements on political affairs. And this is to reveal more about other identifying information that didn’t surface before. During the 2016 presidential election, social media Titan tried to prevent continuous abuse of Facebook’s platform.

Many of us are very much aware of the fact, that during the 2016 presidential campaigns Russians propagates a political agenda in the US. And this type of fake hype can widely mislead people in order to disorganize the outcome of the complete election. As a result, Donald Trump wins against Hilary Clinton.

The Russians used to purchase ads on social platforms like Facebook, Google, and Twitter during the campaign to spread misinformation. And in effect, the social media and tech giants were shattered from inside when the propaganda campaign became public.

In the 2017 month of October, Twitter determines that it would ban certain Russian advertisers with immediate effect. Facebook also discloses that the Russain on the behalf of the Russian government tries to meddle with the election. And the Sputniks also happens to have involvement Facebook further adds.

Twitter also going parallel to Facebook and took makes millions from the advertisement. The campaign they run directly affects the political ideologies and agenda of thousands of people.

Twitter had much less to say.

On the contrary, Twitter reduces their commission and discounts nearly $1.9 million in revenue they have generated from the Russian body.

A Perspective that Billions have

All the tech giants or any other industry is based on a targeted customer who keeps interests in certain products or services. And this is the reason people should know about their votes and who are the ones trying to influence them and reason behind them. They should also know who are the ones running the advertisements and trying to cover it up.

This is the reason over the past years several changes were made to ensure legitimacy and better transparency in ads involving elections, social matters, and political affairs. We already have witnessed how votes can be manipulated and how could someone with low credibility win an election.

People are taking major steps to protect the election from intimidating propaganda and prepare for the next U.S election in 2020. Some of the major steps would be letting people know more information about each advertiser. Toughening the process of authorization for the U.S advertisers and amending a list of social issues in the US better reflects the discussion of the public on and even off Facebook.

Requirements of the New Clause

The initiative is already in progress. Now before running ads about election, politics and social affairs, advertisers are will require to get authorization starting from 2018. Facebook now saves all the ads in their Ad Library, so that they are available for the public for 7 years.

The process of authorization already needs advertisers in the U.S to furnish identification. And in addition they need to confirm their personal individuality and where are they based on.

The new guidelines also ask advertisers to put a “Paid for by” clause on their ads to let the world who is responsible for them. But still, advertisers happen to mislead “Paid for by” disclaimer on their ads.

From September 2018, Social media Giant asks advertisers to furnish more information about their organization before Facebook checks and approves. And moreover, if they remain incompetent to provide the desired information within mid of October then their ads pause.

Advertisers will have 5 options to choose from to better render information and among the list of 5, 3 clauses are to show that the advertiser has registration with the U.S Government. If they provide the necessary information Facebook will allow them to use the registered name of their organization.

Other additional documents or information is providing the US street address, phone number and a business website matching the email :

  1. A government website domain which should match the email ending with .gov or .mil.
  2.  Tax identification number with the registered organization.
  3. Identification number of Federal election commission(FEC).

And if the local politicians don’t have this information, they have to furnish the necessary information given below:

  1. An organization name with variable phone number business email address. Most importantly a business website with a domain that should match the registered business mail.
  2. Or if providing this information is out of their hand, then they have to depend absolutely on Page’s Admin’s legal name associated with their personal identification information.

More Updates on Social Issues

Facebook brings another list of social issues. And the update will furnish the US list associated with issue lists in countries who recently held an election. The shift from 20 subjects to 10 divisions doesn’t mean the restriction process will be less strict.

Facebook continues to apprehend a range of topics circling by the 10 referenced categories.

It’s like for example, in the Social Issues and Social Awareness category Facebook will not discontinue to first identify and then review ads on social subjects like Terrorism, women Empowerment, and Corruption.

If the ads running contradict the truth or go against sensitive subjects like ballot action and legislation, the process of the authorization will continue to apply full-fledged.
